18 March 1897 - West Branch Times

Elizabeth Frank, only daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Frank, was born in Canfield, Trumbell county, Ohio, October 7th 1821, and died at her home near West Liberty, March 3rd 1897.

On August 27th 1840, she was married to Rev Peter Gates, an itinerant preacher of the German Evangelical church, who had passed away from labor to reward February 18th 1882. To them were born eleven children, ten of whom survive her. She united with the Presbyterian church when fifteen years of age, later uniting with the Evangelical church with which she held her membership at the time of her death.

For many years they endured the privations of heroic pioneer itinerant life. Their circuit at one time was three hundred miles long and contained thirty five preaching places. After many years of faithful service, they moved to Iowa, settling near West Liberty, in 1865.

For many years mother Gates had been in feeble health, and long enjoyed the quiet rest of a faithful servant of God and passed away to her heavenly home March 3rd. The funeral occurred from the M.E. church, March 6th, the text Rev. 7 15-16, being one used by the deceased husband on a similar occasion in 1838. She was laid to rest in Oakridge cemetery.
