He was born May 25, 1855, near Merrow, Ohio, one of a family of thirteen children. The family came to Iowa in 1865 and settled on a farm two miles northwest of Downey. Mr. Whitacre was married Dec. 12, 1877, to Mary Mead and they settled on a farm seven miles west of West Liberty, where they made their home for more than ten years. Two brothers also survive, Albert Whitacre and Amos Whitacre, both of West Liberty. Mr. Whitacre took an active part in the civic affairs of the town and community. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias lodge.

He was a brother-in-law of Dr. L. J. Leech of this place and was well known here. Funeral services were held at West Liberty Sunday afternoon, with burial beside his wife, whose death occurred a few months ago.
