24 March 1910 - West Branch Times

J. W. Rummels, one of Nichols most prominent and best known citizens and business men, succumbed to an illness of several weeks duration and passed away at his home Sunday night. When the word went forth that he was dead many realized that Nichols had lost a good citizen and an upright man. His passing will be keenly felt as a loss to the community as well as to his family.

J. W. Rummels was born in the state of Pennsylvania on December 1, 1831, and had attained the advanced age of 78 years, 3 months and 19 days. He moved with his family to West Branch in 1876 and remained there until 1882 when he moved to Nichols and started a general merchandise business in which he took an active part until about ten years ago when he retired and business was continued by his son. He was married in 1853 to Miss Amanda Squibb. Eight children were born to the union, of whom seven survive: Henry Rummels and Mary Stepp of West Branch, Sadie Few of Lone Tree, John Rummels of West Liberty, and Susie Rummels, Lillie Schoneberg and J. W. Rummels, Jr., of this place. Also one sister survives, Mrs. Lydia Dawson of West Branch. One daughter preceeded him in death on September 11, 1905.

The funeral services were held from the Christian church Wednesday forenoon at 10:30 o'clock, Rev. W. E. Loeb officiating. The Masonic lodge had charge of the services and burial was in the West Liberty cemetery.
