Muscatine Journal Daily Journal Saturday September 6, 1884, pg 2

Charles Warfield Washburn, son of Arthur Washburn of this city, met his death by accident, May 25th, of this year, on the British steamer Lusitania during a trip from London to Port Said, and the fatal news did not reach his Muscatine home until yesterday.

Charles left Muscatine to follow the sea in 1849, and has been a “merry sailor lad” from that day to this, familiar with the ports of every nation and with the stars reflected in every sea. His foreign home was London, where he leaves a wife and children. He was mate of the “Lusitania” and probably there were few as able seamen and officers to be found in Her Majesty’s service. Deceased was born in this city Sept. 12, 1838.
