William Hoffman, 86, prominent Muscatine attorney since 1870, died at 2:00 A.M. Wednesday morning, March 2nd, at his home after an illness of several weeks. Pneumonia caused his death.

Mr. Hoffman was born March 19th, 1845, in Germany, and came to America with his parents the year of his birth. He was graduated from the University of Iowa in 1870 and was admitted to the bar the same year. He practiced continuously in Muscatine until ill health forced him to retire recently.

Mr. Hoffman had been in partnership with his brother, who continues in the work.

He was married to Miss Irene Hutchinson in 1874. Mr. Hoffman was a member of the First Presbyterian church. He was a Civil War veteran.

Surviving are the widow, four sons, Arthur, Ralph and Fred, all of Muscatine, and Dr. Paul Hoffman of Tipton; one daughter, Mrs. L. L. Jeffers, Los Angeles, California; and a sister, Mrs. F. E. Poris of Wapello, Ia.

Funeral services were held Friday at two o'clock p.m. at the First Presbyterian church, and burial was in the Greenwood cemetery.
