Services for Ruthetta Smith of West Liberty were Tuesday at West Liberty United Methodist Church

Mrs. Smith died Saturday, September 16, 2000, at Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty, following a long illness. She was 73.

The Reverend Frank Schultz officiated. Organist was Les VerHelst. Pallbearers were Jeff Smith, Ben Smith, Tony Smith, Greg Johnson, Rusty Johnson, Kim Johnson, Jennifer Nolan, John Nath, Bryan Smith and Aaron Smith. Burial was at Oak Ridge Cemetery in West Liberty. A memorial fund was established for the West Liberty Rescue Unit, West Liberty United Methodist church and Simpson Memorial Home. Barker Funeral Home, West Liberty, was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Smith was born August 25, 1927, at Buffalo, a daughter of Roy H. and Mary Etta Carpenter Merchant. She graduated from Davenport Central High School in 1944. She married Robert L. Smith at Cedar Valley United Methodist church on June 1, 1947.

She was a former school teacher, and gave piano lessons in her home. She was also past secretary of the West Liberty Chamber of Commerce. Most recently she worked at the Muscatine County Fair for 21 years, including the last seven years as fair manager. She retired in 1991.

She was a member of West Liberty United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was also a member of Women’s Club and Garden Club.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, of West Liberty; two daughters, Joanne Moore and her husband, Jerry, of Iowa City, and Janine Johnson of Muscatine; two sons, Dennis Smith and his wife, Jean, of Norfolk, Nebraska, and Douglas Smith and his wife, Linda, of Phoenix, Arizona; a brother, Richard Merchant and his wife, Donna, of Muscatine; ten grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A brother, Robert, Robert Merchant, died earlier.
