Aged Colored Resident Dies – James Nelson Lee, Victim of Paralytic Stroke – Born in Slavery, Freed During Civil War Resident of this County More Than 40 Years.

Born in slavery, and freed by the Northern army during the Civil war, James Nelson Lee, colored, died at his home on Muscatine Island Friday, as the result of a paralytic stroke, the second in about five years. He was 80 years old.

He was born in Albemarle county, Virginia, October 15, 1840. He was impressed into service as a camp laborer by the northern army during the Civil war, and served until the end of the struggle. Five years later he came north, and came to this county more than 40 years ago. He has made his home here ever since, and for the last 30 years has resided on his farm on Muscatine Island, near the Northern Gravel pits.

In 1884 he married Miss Rosa E Lamb, of this city. To this reunion five children were born, two of whom survive. They are Miss Lucinda Lee and Miss Hazel Lee, both at home. He also leaves to mourn his loss four sisters, Mrs. John E. Nash, of Lakewood, N.J., Mrs. Maria Banks and Mrs. Ellen Carter, of Newark, N.J., and Mrs. Carrie Terrell, of Washington, D.C., and two brothers, Jessie Lee, at home, and Henry Lee, of Pittsburg, Pa., His wife, two daughters, and one son and one brother preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be conducted from the home at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon and at 2:30 from the Bethel M.E. church by the Rev. P. H. Jackson. Burial will be made in Greenwood cemetery.
