Tipton Advertiser, Tipton, Iowa, January 17, 1919

Wilton-
James McMillen, 80 years of age, born in slavery and a veteran of the civil war, in which he fought in the Confederate Army beside his master, died Saturday evening at 7 o’clock at the Louise Healy home, four miles northwest of town, where he had worked for many years. He was born in slavery, and was ill with dropsy for a long time. He lived here for forty-five years. The funeral was held this afternoon with Rev. O. B. Lee officiating and the body was buried here.
