BENNETT, Iowa - William D. 'Huck' Huckstadt, 70, of Bennett, died Monday, July 10, 2000, at Genesis East Hospital in Davenport.

Services will be at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Tipton. Burial will be at Inland Cemetery with full military honors.

Visitation will be at the Fry Funeral home in Tipton.

Mr. Huckstadt was born on July 29, 1929, in Giard, the son of William and Kathryn Reardon Huckstadt. He married Jolene Bachtell in 1952 in San Diego while he was serving in the U.S. Navy.

He graduated from Monona High School in 1948 and was nicknamed 'Mr. Shortstop' in his high school yearbook. He played on Monona baseball teams that won two state championships in 1947 and 1948. He graduated from Upper Iowa College in 1957.

He had a teaching and coaching career that spanned 35 years including 26 years at Bennett, 6 years at Maquoketa Valley, and 3 years in Luana. He was a successful girls basketball and softball coach, winning over 77 percent of his games in both sports. He was proud to be inducted into the Upper Iowa Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994.

He served on the board of directors of the 3/30 Country Club in Lowden and was a member of the Rixe-Lawson Post of the American Legion in Bennett. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoyed attending ball games and visiting with his many former players and coaching colleagues.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Jolene; a daughter Lori Dunn of Davenport; two sons, Bill Huckstadt of Bennett and Kim Huckstadt and his wife, Luanne, of Maquoketa; a grandson, Tate William; four sisters, Kathryn Hoskin of Nevada City, Calif.; Patty Keyes of Dubuque; Sandy Bollman of Monona; Sharon Jackley of Aurora, Ill.; and a brother, Terry of Chatfield, Minn.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Willie Monona.

He had many friends throughout Eastern Iowa. He was loved by many and will be missed by all.
