DAVENPORT
Richard E. Atwater, 75, of Davenport, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus in Davenport. Memorial services will be at the Zion Lutheran Church in Davenport. Inurnment will be at the Rock Island National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to the family.

McGinnis, Chambers and Sass Funeral Home in Bettendorf is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Atwater was born Jan. 14, 1924, in Sandusky, Ohio, the son of Ernest E. and Olivia Kirschner Atwater. He married Rosetta D. Penrod in Morrison, Ill., on Aug. 26, 1963. He was employed by International Harvester Farmall Works in Rock Island, Ill., as a tool crib attendant, retiring in 1981 after 19 years of employment. He was a long-time member and former steward of the United Auto Workers Union, Local No. 1309 of Rock Island. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Bristol during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Rosetta; his daughters, Tina L. Atwater, Sonja Hurto and Sue Colby, all of Davenport; his sons, Rick Atwater and Pat Atwater, both of Davenport, David Atwater of DeWitt and Bob Griffin of Muscatine; 18 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Vivian Dowell of Westfield, Ind., Lois Caves of Morton, Ill. and Virginia Purdue of Klamath Falls, Ore. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Diana Atwater; his son, Mike Atwater; and his brothers, John Atwater and Tom Atwater.
