Columbus Junction, February, 16, -- John Chown passed away at his home in this place on Monday, February 15, at 11:30 a. m. He was born in Devonshire, England, January 11, 1820, where on July 5, 1843, he was married to Miss Elliza Aplin and together soon after, they came to America. They lived for a time in Virginia and afterward at Zanesville, Ohio, coming from there to Iowa in 1856. They settled in Lake township, Muscatine county, which was their home for a number of years. Here in 1874, Mrs. Chown died and her husband then lived with his children until a year ago in January when he established his own home in Columbus Junction with a married daughter, Mrs. Breckenridge, as housekeeper. His last illness was about ten days duration. Mr. Chown was the father of eleven children, only four of whom survive him. These are Louis Chown and Mrs. Mary Foster, of Nichols, and George and Eliza Breckenridge, of Columbus Junction, all of whom were with their father during his illness. Short funeral services were held at the home at 3 o’clock this afternoon, conducted by Rev J. C. Kendrick, of the M. E. church, and on Wednesday at about 11:30 the regular funeral service will take place at High Prairie Chapel, Lake township, Muscatine county, also conducted by Rev. Kendrick. Interment will be at that place.
