Rites Set For 3 Teen - Agers

2 Youths Escape Car-Truck Crash

A car and truck crash on, Highway 22, two miles west of Muscatine, brought tragedy into three Muscatine families Thursday night.

Services have been set for the three Muscatine teen-agers killed in the crash. A fourth youth in the car was not seriously injured.

Teresa Hall, 15, daughter of Mrs. Phyllis Gray, 616 Cedar. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at the First Methodist church. Friends may call starting at noon Saturday at the Riley funeral home.

The injured youth is Michael W. Koester, son of Mr. and Mrs. William E. Koester, 621 Climer. He was being held for examination this morning at Muscatine General hospital, but his injuries were not believed to be serious.

Driver of the truck was Mark F. Elder, 18, Rt. 1, Nichols. He escaped with minor injuries and was not hospitalized.

Reconstructing the accident, Deputy Sheriff William Cole said Elder was driving toward Muscatine on Highway 22 with a load of soybeans. The Howe car was approaching Highway 22 on County Road O, at about 8:45 p.m.

Cole related that persons in another car on County Road O said the Howe car apparently stopped at the intersection and then pulled out in front of the truck.

Hit broadside on the left, the top of the car was virtually peeled open in the grinding crash. Both vehicles went into the ditch on the East side of the highway.

The 1958 Chevrolet was owned by the Howe boy and he was believed to be the driver.

Dennis Howe and Terri Day were apparently killed instantly in the crash. They were taken to Muscatine General hospital in the Riley ambulance and pronounced dead on arrival.

Teresa Hall, who had first been taken to Muscatine General hospital, was transferred by ambulance to Iowa City but died several minutes before reaching the University hospital. She was pronounced dead there.

Soybeans spilled on the highway were cleaned away by the highway maintenance crews and the sheriff's department controlled traffic for several hours.

Muscatine County Sheriff Richard Oppelt said at the scene that the three deaths increased the county highway accident fatality roll to 12 for this year.
