Nichols – Lt. Carl F. Poole, Who had been stationed in India with the third Combat Cargo squadron since early this year, met his death in Burma as a result of an aircraft crash, his family has been informed.
Lt. Poole was born in West Liberty, March 9, 1918, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Poole. He attended the Nichols public school and graduated from Nichols high school with the class of 1935.
He was inducted into the armed services on Aug. 5, 1942, at Ft. Des Moines and started his training at Jefferson Barracks on Aug 18, 1942. He completed a course in engine mechanics at Parks Air college on Dec. 26, 1942 and then sent to Albuquerque, N. M., from where he transferred into cadet training. He started this training June 15, 1943 at Sheppard field at Wichita Falls, Tex., then went to Transylvania college at Lexington, Ky., and then to San Antonio, Tex., where he was classified as a pilot. He took primary training at Sparatoan air college at Tulsa, Okla., and basic flight training at Waco army air field, Waco, Tex., receiving his wings and commission as second lieutenant at Pampa army air field, Pampa, Tex. Lt. Poole received his transitional training with the troop carrier command at George field, Lawrenceville, Ill., and left the states from Bear field, Ft. Wayne, Ind., about Feb. 22, 1945, going to India where he was stationed with the Third Combat Cargo Squadron.
Lt. Poole married Geneva B. Whitacre on Nov. 28, 1942 at St. Louis, Mo., and she was with him through his complete training period. His entire life was spent in the Nichols community until his induction.
Surviving besides his wife, Mrs. Carl Poole, of Burlington, are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Poole, two sisters, Mrs. Robert Chown and Mrs. Robert Harbit, three nephews and a niece, of Nichols, and other relatives.
Lt. Poole was a member of the I.O.O.F and Rebekah lodges and the Masonic lodge at Nichols.
