MUSCATINE, Iowa - Walter E. Chalupa, 87, of 3565 150th, Stockton, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, at Muscatine Care Center.

Services will be at Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. The Rev. Wade Duroe of the Hillcrest Baptist Church will officiate. Pallbearers will be George Dunker, Ron Kurriger, Darrell Hepker, Phillip Chalupa, Mark Chalupa, and Dave Long. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Alzheimer's Foundation.

Mr. Chalupa was born on Dec. 24, 1912, in Davenport, the son of William and Mary Showens Chalupa. He married Willodean McCleary on April 15, 1948, in Muscatine.

He was a World War II veteran serving in the US Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the Wilton American Legion; the V.F.W. in Fort Myers Beach, Florida; Elks Lodge No. 304 and the Moose Lodge in Davenport.

He was self-employed with Chalupa Brothers Construction for many years, retiring in 1990.

Survivors include his wife, Willodean Chalupa of Stockton, two daughters, Joann Schmidt and her husband, Eric, of Springfield, Ill. and Mary Jo Chalupa of Manchester, New Hampshire; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Don Chalupa of Phoenix, Arizona, and Art Chalupa and his wife, Helen, of Muscatine.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Donald Lee Chalupa; two sisters, Beulah and Margueritte and two brothers, Phillip and Rollo.
