Hurst For Congress

HURST

Muscatine Journal, October 27, 1896.

Alfred Hurst for Congress.

HOW WAS IT?

Under the head of “Evidence of Conversion,” the Muscatine News-Tribune announces that the Delmar Journal, heretofore Republican, now “boldly contends for the election of Senator Hurst, the Democratic candidate for Congress,” and it proceeds to quote from that paper, among other things, that Mr. Hurst “owns 2,700 acres of land, feeds a large number of cattle annually and his interests are identical with those of all producers.” The Muscatine Hurst organ neglected to tell its readers that several months ago the Delmar Journal published the following letter which was received from Alf. Hurst, and claimed it to be verbatim et literatim, as Mr. Hurst had written it:

OFFICE OF
A.HURST & CO.
Mfrs of Strictly Wood Burnt
PURE WHITE LIME
Wholesalers of
CEMENT, HAIR AND PLASTER PARIS

Maquoketa, Iowa, April 20, 1891

Hon. Floyd Sunderlin
Delmar, Iowa

Dear Sir
herewith Enclosed please find my Check to pay for free advertisement as per Enclosiare-you have assisted me wonderfully-in the past by similar items published in your estimateble paper. All that I am I owe to your wonderful talent. I cannot afford to let such favos pass by unnoticed-knowing that ink and type cost you something if paid for.
Thanking you very much for the interest taken in my wellfair.
I am resptfuy yours
Alfred Hurst

This letter was published by Sunderlin, says the DeWitt Observer, to show that Hurst knows just as much about spelling, punctuation, capitalization and the like as a mule does about singing, and to show his incompetency in the State Senate. The Delmar Journal is now supporting Hurst for Congress. Why? What brought about its ‘conversion’ of which the Muscatine News-Tribune boasts? There is no evidence that like Paul its editor had a revelation from heaven or a heavenly vision of any sort. Is it possible that Mr. Hurst’s large possessions dazzled and bewildered the eyes of the Delmar editor?
