Mary Catharine (Hintermeister) Stuhler
8 August 1856 - 9 May 1907

Mary Catharine Hintermeister was born 8 August 1856 in Muscatine, Iowa. She was the youngest of three children born to Jake and Rosina Hintermeister, both of whom had immigrated to America from Germany. Not much is known about Mary's early years, but it is assumed that she had a childhood typical of the era.

On 6 March 1879, Mary married George William Stuhler Jr. at the German Evangelical Church in Muscatine (now combined with the United Church of Christ). Although George W. was from Monticello, Iowa, the Hintermeister and Stuhler families were long-time friends.

George's father, George Stuhler, Sr., had immigrated to America from a town in Southern Germany called Homberg in 1849, and moved to Muscatine in 1850. In Muscatine he started a shoe shop and lived here for five years. While in Muscatine, George Sr. married Catherine Riess (1 November 1830 - 21 September 1899). The couple had four children who are listed in order of birth as follows:

***George William***( 4 October 1853 - 6 February 1928)
***Conrad**********( 1855 - 1855)
***William*********( 4 May 1859 - 3 March 1934)
***Fred F.**********(19 March 1869 - 20 January 1921)

It is assumed that the Hintermeister and Stuhler families developed a long friendship during this time period. The marriage announcement of Mary Hintermeister and George W. Stuhler states that the families were old friends from the Fatherland and may have come over on the same ship. Because the families came from different parts of Germany, and arrived in different years, it is believed that the information was stated incorrectly. A transcription of the wedding announcement from the 13 January 1879 Monticello Express reads as follows:
***********
"Stuhler - Heudermeister"

"This is a very happy and auspicious union. The families united were old and warm friends in the Faderland and we believe the parents came to this country on the same ship. Long years of patient industry and honorable endeavor have brought wealth and social position to both families. The old people renew their youth in the presence of the happiness of their children and the friendship begun in the old country is cemented anew in this new land and perpetuated in this loving union of their children. The young wife is not wholly a stranger in Monticello for having visited here some months ago at which time she made many friends who will be glad to welcome her permanent return, this so agreeable and cultured lady.

The fortunate young husband has grown up here since boyhood and belongs to that class of young men who are to make the solid men of the future. We congradulate the young people and wish them many years of mutual happiness and prosperity, and not less, do we congradulate the parents upon both sides upon the realization of their hopes and ambitious for their children in this happy and auspicious marriage."
**********
George Sr. and his family moved from Muscatine to Canton, Jackson County, Iowa, in 1855. The records show that one of George Sr.'s sons, Conrad, died and is buried in Canton.

Five years later the Stuhler family moved again to Monticello, Iowa, where George Sr. remained for the rest of his life.

It is assumed that the Stuhler and Hintermeister families kept in touch over the years and visited each other on a periodic basis. It is also assumed that Mary Catharine and George W. fell in love during one of these visits.

As a young man, George W. was educated in St. Louis. Later George W. along with his brothers became partners in his father's successful shoe store business. In 1874 George W. went into partnership with John Lorentzen, who had a grocery store next to the Stuhler's shoe store. Within two years the partnership was dissolved and George W. purchased the grocery. George W. continued to run this very successful business until a few days before his death, a period of 54 years.

Mary Catharine Hintermeister and George W. Stuhler had six children listed in order of birth as follows:

***Katharine R.*****(7 October 1880 - 29 May 1932)
***Louis G.********( January 1882 - Unknown)
***Carl F.**********( February 1887 - Unknown)
***Albert J.*********( July 1890 - 1941)
***Maurine*********(1 February 1895 - 1 May 1895)
***Riess George*****( July 1897 - Unknown)

a) It is believed that Katharine never married and lived her entire life in Monticello.

b) Louis became a doctor and moved to Rochester, Minnesota. His wife's name was Jesse. The couple had two sons named George and James. James' wife's name is Leeta and they have three children, Susan, James, and Tom. James now lives in Davenport, Iowa.

c) Carl moved to Chevy Chase, Maryland. His wife's name was Viva. Carl and Viva had one daughter, named Jean Maxine, who died young. The couple also had an adopted son. After Carl's death, Viva moved to Winterset, Flordia.

d) Albert married Wilma McIntyre (1892 - 1915). The couple had one daughter named Mary Elizabeth. Mary married James Rosborough, and lives in Moline, Illinois. Mary and James had a daughter named Jane Ellen and a son named James. Albert Stuhler died in Monticello, Iowa.

e) Riess moved to Rochester, Minnesota, and operated a shoe store. Riess married Alice Kint, but this marriage eventually ended. The couple had one son, George (born 9 August 1930), who married Lyn Yip. George and Lyn moved to Bremerton, Washington. Riess and Alice also had a daughter, Jane (born 16 June 1929), who married Dr. George Magee and moved to Reno, Nevada. Jane and George had three daughters, Susan (born 7 January 1961), Jane (born 4 June 1963), and Catharine (born 27 January 1966).

It is believed that Riess was named after the Riess family. It should be noted that Riess was his grandmother's name, and that J.J. Riess was the minister who married Jacob (Johann) Hintermeister and Rosina Dold.

Sometime prior to 1900, Jacob Hintermeister, Mary's father, moved in with Mary and George W. The 1900 census shows that he was living with them in 1900. The 1910 census also lists Jake's residence with the Stuhlers, and shows he was living on his own income.

Since Mary had passed away several years earlier on 9 May 1907, it must be assumed that Jake and George W. were good friends as well as being related.

In Jacob's will, he indicated that he had deeded real estate located in Kansas City, Missouri , to Mary prior to her death. Jacob also left $3000 to his son-in-law, George W. Stuhler. This also indicates that Jake had a high regard for the Stuhler family.

George W. Stuhler passed away 6 February 1928. It is interesting to note that there are no families having the name Stuhler, who now live in Monticello.
