Maria Josephine Mullen, 82, a resident of Montgomery county for 53 years, died Sunday, December 31, at 1 o'clock a.m. at the home of her son, Bert Mullen, northwest of Red Oak. The cause of death was heart trouble. She had been ailing for several months due to feebleness in her advanced years but her last illness was of but a few hours duration.

Funeral services were held this afternoon at 1:30 at the Methodist church in Red Oak in charge of Rev. F.W. Simpson, pastor, assisted by Rev. Mr. Banker of Elliott. Serving as pallbearers were three sons and three nephews respectively: Bud Mullen, Bert Mullen, Russell Mullen, Clarence Rea, Frank Rea, and Herschel Mullen. Burial was in the Pilot Grove cemetery, northeast of Red Oak.

Maria Josephine Garside was born at Bellevue, Jackson county, Iowa, May 9, 1851, a daughter of Thomas and Jane Garside. She grew to young womanhood in the town of her birth and came with her parents to Montgomery county, locating in Pilot Grove township, where she had lived since. On December 6, 1882, she was married near Elliott to Ebenezer Mullen.

After several years on a farm in Pilot Grove township, Mr. and Mrs. Mullen moved to Red Oak in 1914 to make their home. Mr. Mullen died in Red Oak, October 22, 1916. In later years Mrs. Mullen has made her home with her son, Bert Mullen, in Pilot Grove township.

Mrs. Mullen is survived by a son and daughter and four step-children. They are Mrs. H.C. Latimer, Elma, Wash., Russell G. Mullen, Stanton; Clark Mullen, Kit Carson, Colo.; B.O. Mullen and B.W. Mullen of Elliott, and Mrs. Emma Rea of Griswold. Two brothers also survive, E.A. Garside, of Charlotte, Iowa, and Frank Garside of Gault, Calif. Her daughter, Mrs. H.C. Latimer of Elma, Wash., and her brother, E.A. Garside, of Charlotte, Iowa, were here to attend the funeral.
