J.N. Cooper, for six years a resident of Villisca, died at his home here Saturday morning at 2:30 o’clock, his death resulting from complications incident to old age.

He was born June 29, 1840, in Harrison county, Ohio, and came to Iowa with his family in 1855, locating at Quasqueton, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. He was a soldier in the civil war, serving with Company D, 16th Iowa infantry.

On Thanksgiving day in 1866 he was married to Nettie McCaughey, and to this union four children were born. They are W. Ross Cooper, Kansas City, Mo.; Dean G. Cooper, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Miss Zada M. Cooper, Iowa City, Iowa; and J. Clark Cooper, Villisca, Iowa.

Mr. and Mrs. Cooper moved to Red Oak, Iowa, in the spring of 1900, living there until they moved to Villisca in 1917. Besides his wife, who is 81 years old, and his children, Mr. Cooper leaves 4 grandchildren and also a sister, Mrs. Margaret Hastings who is living at Quasqueton, Ia., at the age of 90 years.

Mr. Cooper united with the Congregational church in Quasqueton, transferring his membership to the Congregational church in Red Oak when he moved there and was a member of that church at the time of his death. His funeral was held at the home of his son, Dr. J.C. Cooper, Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, with Rev. J. L. Boyd in charge of the service. The pall bearers were W.A. Stillians, H.W. Gridley, J. McIntosh, W.H. Rusk, C.C. Baker and A.W. Hill, and the singing was by Mr. and Mrs. Albert F. Davis, Miss Georgia Winter and F.E. Shane. Interment was in the Villisca cemetery. All of Mr. Cooper’s children were here to attend the funeral.
