Marcellyn P. Kurtenback 1913-2008

Marcellyn Patricia Pryor Kurtenback, age 95, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Thursday, March 20, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Care Center, where she has been a resident for the past several years. Marcellyn Patricia Kurtenback was born March 18, 1913 in Creighton, Nebraska the daughter of Francis and Bessie (Heyer) Pryor. Her mother died when she was about two years old and later her father married Catherine Darcy. She was to become one of nine children and spent much of her time caring for her siblings.

Marcellyn graduated from St. Catherine’s School of Nursing in Omaha, Nebraska in 1935. While in nurses training she met and cared for Neal Kurtenback. They courted and subsequently were united in marriage on October 16, 1935. They resided in Omaha where Neal was a private contractor at the Omaha Stockyards. During this time their only daughter, Suzanne, was born. They moved to Red Oak in late 1938 where Neal managed the Elliot Stock Purchasing Office. During this time Marcellyn put her nursing skills to work in private practice. In 1955 Neal formed a partnership with Tom Carder and started Carder and Kurtenback Insurance Office. Neal retired in 1982.

Marcellyn became active in the community. She was a member and the President of the Doe organization of the BPO Elks Lodge, a Girl Scout Leader, lifelong member of the Red Oak Country Club, a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where she devoted many hours of service including the Altar and Rosary Society, and was a member of both the Murphy Memorial and Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Auxiliaries. She enjoyed golfing, belonged to several bridge clubs, and became and accomplished painter and artist. Even with all of her activities, she found her greatest pleasure in keeping an organized and neat home, as well as looking after Neal.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother; five half-brothers; one half- sister; and her husband: Neal Kurtenback on November 27, 1989. Survivors include her daughter: Suzanne Fleer and husband Darryl of Colorado Springs, Colorado, three grandsons: William Fleer and wife Susan of Denver, Colorado; Mark Fleer and wife Ellen of Denver, Colorado; and Steven Fleer of Santa Ana, California; great grandchildren: Ethan Fleer, Austin Fleer, Kendall Fleer, and Madison Fleer; half-brother: Paul Pryor and wife Lois of Omaha, Nebraska; half-sister: Kay LaVoie and husband Phil of Omaha, Nebraska; many nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

A memorial mass will be celebrated 11 AM Saturday, April 5, 2008 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial will take place at a later date in the Evergreen Cemetery. Marcellyn donated her body to the Creighton University for research. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
