Obituary.

H. A. Embree, one of Douglas township’s most prominent and influential farmers died at the home of his son, Grant, on Tuesday morning, December 16. He had not been in the best of health during the past few years and been failing rapidly the last several months.

The death of Mr. Embree removes from its midst one of this community’s most respected and esteemed citizens. He held the confidence and trust of those who knew him, having served two years as a member of the county board of supervisors and many years as township trustee. He was a man of sound common sense and business sagacity.

Hiram Alonzo Embree was born at Starkey, Yates county, New York, February 12, 1841. On April 25, 1861, at the age of twenty years, he enlisted in Co. K., Third, N. Y. Volunteers, and received his honorable discharge on May 1, 1863.

He was married on June 21, 1863, to Miss Mary E. Hillyer and to this union were born six children, one of whom died in infancy. The children are Grant S., Albert H., William, and Mrs. Riley Curry, all residing in Douglas township, and Samuel, residing near Elliott.

Mr. Embree re-enlisted on January 2, 1864, in Co. C., 5th N. Y. Artillery, and was discharged June 6, 1865, by reason of the loss of a leg, caused by a gunshot wound.

After his discharge from the army he engaged in the vocation of shoemaker and continued at this trade until he came to Iowa in the spring of 1869. He located on a farm two and a half miles east of Grant and was one of the earliest settlers in this section of the country. Mr. Embree was an industrious man and amassed a considerable fortune during his life time, being able to give each of his children a farm.

Funeral services were held Thursday at eleven o’clock at the M. E. church, Rev. C. F. Smith conducting the services. Interment was made in the Grant cemetery.
