John Reed was born in Harrison County, Ohio, April 24, 1836, and died at his home in Lorimore, Iowa, February 15, 1917, at the age of 80 years, 9 months and 21 days.
When a young man he came with his parents to Iowa. During the Civil War he enlisted in Company B, 18th Iowa Infantry Volunteers, served 3 years and 3 months, and was honorably discharged at the close of the war.
He was united in marriage to Mary S. Allison at Thayer, Iowa, December 9, 1866. To this union were born nine children, seven of whom are still living, Viola having passed away at the age of 13 years, and Willie in infancy.
Mr. Reed was a member of the Pleasant Valley Church, having joined when a young man. He was also a member of the Grand Army of the Republic.
He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, four sons, C.W. Reed, of Burns, Wyoming; J.W. Reed of Elliott, Iowa; M.A. Reed of Mitchell South Dakota; B.K. Reed of Lorimor, Iowa; three daughters, Mrs. J.E. Edwards, of Bassano, Alberta, Canada; Mrs. E.O. Green, of Lorretta, Nebraska; Mrs. A.L. McMains of Des Moines, Iowa; one brother, Fred Reed of Elliott, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Sade Fitch, of Thayer, Iowa, Mrs. Hannah Tracey, of Enid, Oklahoma; twenty- eight grand children, several other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church in Lorimre, Iowa, at 2:00 o'clock Sunday afternoon, February 18, 1917, conducted by Rev. Roy N. Spooner, of Pleasantville, Iowa, assisted by Rev. J. E. Hughes of Lorimore. Interment was made in the Loromor cemetery.
