Tuesday, January 6, 1903

Shortly before noon Saturday Dec. 3rd. John Peterson, a prosperous miner of Hiteman was killed by a fall of slate in Mine No. 1, Hiteman. He was rescued just as soon as possible but lived only a few moments after taken from the mine. He was 44 years old, had been a miner for 24 years, leaves wife and children. He was a valuable man in the mine and a good citizen. The funeral occurs today, burial in Oak View Cemetery, Albia.

The funeral of John Peterson of Hiteman, occurred Tuesday and the sermon was preached in the opera house, Hiteman, and the remains were brought to Albia for interment, followed by a long procession of sorrowing relatives and sympathizing friends, his brother Odd Fellows attending in a body. Mr. Peterson was killed in the mine, Saturday, by a fall of slate. He was a popular and trustworthy man, leaves a wife and several children, mostly grown up, to mourn his untimely death.

Resolutions of Respect
Hiteman, Ia., Jan. 10th 1903.
Whereas, It has pleased the All Wise Creator of the universe to take from our midst by death our worthy Brother John Peterson who was fatally injured while at his work on the 3rd. Inst. And

Whereas, In the death of Brother Peterson Hiteman Lodge No. 548, I.O.O.F., have lost a true friend and a faithful Odd Fellow. Therefore be it Resolved, That we mourn sincerely the loss of so worthy a member, and that we extend our heartfelt sympathy to his bereaved family in this their deep affliction.

Resolved, That our charter be draped in mourning for thirty days in respect due him, that a copy of these resolutions be sent to the bereaved family and spread upon the minutes of our Lodge and published in the county papers.

NOTE: John Peterson husband of Elizabeth Ellen Naismith (1858 - 1928), after John's death Elizabeth married his brother August Peterson (1864 - 1949)
