At Albia on the evening of the 24th an accident happened at the shaft of the Iowa and Wisconsin Coal Co. which resulted in the death of one James Cullinane, a laborer. Those running the mines had been engaged in hoisting water out of the shaft, and, in order to do this, had to remove the rail around the top of the shaft. While it remained open in this way, young Cullinane, in some unaccountable manner, either walked into the shaft or was knocked in by the working of the machinery. The shaft is about 90 feet deep.
