J. F. COLEMAN

Joe Coleman, well known citizen of the vicinity of Melrose, died at Moran hospital at that place on April 30, 1940, at the age of 68 years, 4 months and 3 days.

He had been in failing health for two years, but apparently was improving until a short time before his death. He was taken to the Moran hospital on April 27 where all that medical skill and care could do was done, but to no avail. God knew best and called him from this world of sorrow in the early morning of April 30.

Mr. Coleman was a kind and loving husband and father, a good neighbor, always ready to help in every way when aid was needed, and will be sadly missed in the home and community.

He was born Dec. 27, 1871, on the farm where he made his home until he departed from this life. He was married to Miss Anna McGinn on Feb. 18, 1896, who survives him and was constantly at his bedside.

To this union six children were born, John and Mrs. Anna Ryan, of Melrose; Mike, John, Marie and Frances, all at home, and with their mother are left to mourn their great loss. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. J. C. Judge, of Ames, and Mrs. P. H. Judge, of Boone, and innumerable friends. One sister, Mrs. James Foley, and one brother, M. J. Coleman, preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held the following Thursday from the late home to St. Patrick's church, of which he was a faithful member, and where a large crowd assembled to pay a last tribute to their kind friend. Mass was celebrated by the Rev. J.J. Welch, who delivered a fitting eulogy, and burial was in the Mt. Calvary cemetery. Pallbearers were John O'Brien, Matt Lewis, Steve Kasper, Eric Parks, Dan Ryan and Andy Donahue.
