Obituary of Mrs. Mary Dye

Mrs. Mary Dye, for years a resident of Eddyville, passed away at the home of her daughter Mrs. Anna Van Ness in Oskaloosa at 7:40 o'clock last Thursday evening, April 19th, 1917, aged seventy-two years, ten months and nine days.

Mary Gray, daughter of Lewis and Isabel Gray, was born near Bethany, Bartholomew county, Indiana, June 10th, 1844. In 1852 she moved with her parents to the vicinity of Ottumwa, Iowa, and in 1860 moved near Eddyville, Iowa, where she has resided the greater part of the time, although living at Oskaloosa the past few years
In 1862 she united with the Christian church of Eddyville, being baptized by Elder Aaron Oldham. In 1864 she united with the Baptist church. In 1894 she transferred her membership to the Church of Christ, where she had remained a faithful worker. She has been a devoted follower of the Master in the Christian faith and a kind and loving mother and companion.

On March 17th, 1864, she was united in marriage to John Dye. To this union were born four children, John W., Grant, Anna and Abram. She was preceded in death by her husband April 6th, 1891.

She leaves to mourn her departure four children J. W. Dye of Maple, Grant Dye and Mrs. Anna Van Ness of Oskaloosa, and Abram Dye of Albia, ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers and three sisters Amos Gray and Mrs. Martin Swintek of Eddyville, W.P. Gray of Kansas City, and Mrs. Mahala Wall of Des Moines.

The funeral services were held Sunday morning at ten o'clock from the Cheesman Funeral Home at Oskaloosa, Rev. Chas. H. DeVoe, pastor of the Christian church of that place, officiating. The remains of this well known pioneer were taken overland through Eddyville to Shafer cemetery in Pleasant township for interment.
