The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, October 8, 1906

JOHN KAY, the colored man, who formerly resided here and later at Russell,
died in Albia, last Saturday, and his remains were brought to Chariton for
interment, Monday, funeral services being held at the A.M.E. Church. MR.
KAY leaves a wife and three grown sons. He was an industrious, honest man
and has gone to his reward.

For some time he had been in failing health and had been almost blind. His
has been a typical life of many of his race. He was born into slavery and
served his country in arms during the struggle for emancipation and it is
related of him that he was a servant of Gen. McPherson and when that
distinguished warrior fell he was caught in the arms of his loyal friend,
JOHN KAY, where he soon expired. JOHN was but an humble citizen but there
are many in Lucas and surrounding counties who are saddened by his death.
