FORMER ALBIA YOUNG WOMAN DIED MONDAY

Body of Mrs. Carl Friend to Be Returned This Evening

Mrs. Carl Friend, 26 years old, the former Martha James of Albia, died Monday in a Washington, D. C. hospital after having been ill since Thursday. Her parents, escorting the body to Albia for burial, are to reach the city by train at 5:30 this evening. Funeral arrangements will be made upon their return.

Mr. and Mrs. James were informed Sunday that Mrs. Friend was critically ill. They left that evening by train and took a plane from Chicago, Ill., to Washington.

Mrs. Friend, who was married only last June, was understood by relatives here to have been ill with peritonitis. She was rushed to a hospital last week.

Born in England, she came to the United States when three years old and spent her early life in the vicinity of Albia. She attended Albia high school two years, was graduated from Bucknell high school in 1927 and later attended Iowa Success school in Ottumwa.

After being employed for some time in the county treasurer's office, she went to Washington, D. C. in 1929 to take a civil service position. Her husband was also a civil service employe. [sic]

Surviving are her husband; her parents; a sister, Ruby James, and a brother, George James, both of Albia.
