EARLY PIONEER PASSES AWAY

Well Known Citizen of Monroe County Passes Away at Georgetown

On Monday morning, June 5, 1922, relatives and friends in Georgetown received the sad message, which came like an electric shock, that John McCarthy, of Georgetown, was dead.

On this sad day did our Saviour choose to call home his faithful Servant, John McCarthy.

Mrs. William McCarthy of Council Bluffs and the Misses Ellie and Margaret Kelleher of Omaha, were present at the hour of death, with broken hearts and tear dimmed eyes.

Fortified by the last Sacraments of the Church he passed to his eternal reward. May his soul rest in peace.

John McCarthy was born in Co. Cork, Ireland, June 1857, coming to Georgetown in the year 1879. He was a great favorite among his associates, and his friends were numbered by his acquaintances. He has been a farmer for 39 years and for the last 4 years made his home with his cousins, Mr. and Mrs. James Kelleher, Sr. He was united in marriage to Sarah Flattery in April 1894, at St. Patrick's Church, Georgetown.

A throng of relatives and friends gathered at the depot in automobiles and accompanied the remains to the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Kelleher, Sr. Never before in the history of Georgetown Parish has there been a larger or sadder funeral, than this one, which was held on Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock. Requiem Mass was celebrated in St. Patrick's Church with Father Murphy officiating. Interment took place in St. Patrick's Cemetery, where the open grave received the remains of John McCarthy, and soon closed from view all that was mortal.

Heartfelt sympathy is extended to his Brother Owen McCarthy and daughter Mary, who have been with him for the past six weeks, in their hour of affliction.

Relatives from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mr. Owen McCarthy and daughter Mary E. of Wilmington, Del., Mr. and Mrs. William McCarthy and daughter Margaret of Council Bluffs, The Misses Ellie, Annie and Margaret Kelleher of Omaha, Neb., and other friends from all parts of Iowa.

John McCarthy is survived by two brothers, Owen of Wilmington, Del., Ed Callahan of Co. Cork, Ireland, and one sister, Mrs. Dennis Buckley of Co. Cork, Ireland.
