The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, October 25, 1906A frightful accident happened in Albia last Saturday morning at the home of
A.B. MCBRIDE, who lives in the fourth ward, and as a result his two little
sons, aged 20 and 34 months, were badly burned with scalding water. The
mother had a wash boiler filled with boiling water sitting on the stove and
she called her husband to remove it. As he did so his hand was burned and
he dropped the boiler, and the water was spilled all over the room and
drenched the two babies who were playing on the floor. One of the babies
had been in the arms of Retha Baltzley, and her limbs were so badly burned
that she dropped the baby into the water. The feet of MR. and MRS. MCBRIDE
were also burned as they rushed across the floor to the assistance of the
children. Dr. Burke Powell was called and dressed the wounds of the MCBRIDE
children and Dr. Hyatt the burns of the Baltzley girl. The burns extended from the waist down on the children and were so bad that
the flesh all peeled off. Had they been sitting a couple of feet nearer the
stove they would have received all the water on their heads and bodies. The
youngest child died Tuesday morning as a result of the burns, but the other
child it is thought will recover.-- ALBIA NEWS.
