John Schreckengaust was born in Ohio, on June 16th, 1840 and died at his home in East Onawa, March 5th, 1920, age 79 years, 8 months, and 19 days.

Mr. Schreckengaust has earned a warm spot in the hearts of many Onawa people. He was a good man, always faithful to the things which he thought was right, and a devoted Christian. He serves three years in the Civil War and was not only a soldier of the Union but he was also a soldier of the Cross, for he gave his heart to the Lord and was saved from sin 38 years ago. About a year later was sanctified holy and lived with the blessing on his soul until death.

The funeral was conducted Tuesday afternoon from the Mission, which, largely through his efforts was made possible in Onawa, by A.J. Strong, of Bronson, assisted by Rev. L.W. Strong and the local pastor, Rev Truesdell.

The children who were present at the funeral were Will, of Houston, Tex., Arthur, of Chadron, Nebr., Viola Cunningham of Waterloo, Nebr., and Ellen of Leeds, Iowa. The remains were laid to rest in the Onawa Cemetery to a wait the resurrection morning.
