Lila Fern Hinkel, 95, of Onawa, Iowa, passed away March 19, 2025, at Burgess Health Center, Onawa, Iowa.

A funeral service will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, April 4, 2025, at the Goslar Funeral Home Chapel, Onawa, Iowa, with Evangelist Dale Wolf, officiating. A live stream of the service will be posted on the Goslar Funeral Home website, with Lila’s obituary. Burial will follow in the Soldier Valley Cemetery, Pisgah, Iowa. A visitation will be 5:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. Thursday, April 3, 2025, at the Goslar Funeral Home Chapel, Onawa, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.

Lila Fern (Simmons) Hinkel was born September 20, 1929, the daughter of Elmer and Berta (Johnson) Simmons in Pisgah, Iowa. She was one of eleven children. Lila grew up in Pisgah and graduated from Pisgah High School in 1947.

Lila and Ival “Ike” Hinkel were united in marriage on February 27, 1948, in Omaha, Nebraska. To this union two children were born: Peggy and Gordon. They enjoyed a little over sixty-eight years together and farmed near Soldier, Iowa, for fifty-one years. After retirement they moved to Onawa, Iowa, in 1999.

Lila worked as a waitress in the Feed Bunk Café in Moorhead, Iowa, for twenty-five years. She loved to do word search books, yard work, vegetable gardens, flowers, her pets, bottle feeding baby calves, and the good times when the grandchildren came to the farm.

She was baptized as a member of the Reorganized church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Pisgah, Iowa.

Lila was preceded in death by her husband, Ival “Ike” Hinkel; parents, Elmer and Berta (Johnson) Simmons; sisters, Gladys (Les) Hatcher, Annabell (John) Lizer, Hattie (Frank) Bush, and Joyce (passed away at infancy); four brothers, Arnold (Thelma) Simmons, Cal (Pauline) Simmons, Paul (Betheen) Simmons, and Tommy (passed away at infancy); and brothers-in-law, Dallas Flaharty, and Dick Haley.

Survivors include her daughter, Peggy (Rich Leisinger) of Harrisburg, South Dakota; son, Gordon (Darla) Hinkel of Modale, Iowa; grandchildren, Levi (MeLinda) McAndrews and Shea McAndrews of Colorado, Jeremy (Heather) Hinkel of Le Mars, Iowa, Brent (Jenna) Hinkel of Clarkesville, Georgia, Candace (Tyson) Kurth of Woodbine, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Riley and Fiona McAndrews, Kassidy (Kyle) Kommes, Kameron (Piper) Hinkel, Gabe (Maizy), Makenzie, and Noah Hinkel, Lilly, Macie, and Tenly Kurth; great-great-grandson, Abel Kommes; two sisters, Delores Haley of Ocoee, Florida, and Shirley Flaharty of Odessa, Missouri; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
