Darlene Idell Teel, 91, of Whiting, Iowa passed away Sunday, September 8, 2024 at Pleasant View Care Center, Whiting, Iowa, surrounded by her family.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, September 12, 2024 at the Hornick United Methodist Church, Hornick, Iowa with Pastor Catie Newman officiating. A live stream of the service will be posted on the Goslar Funeral Home website with Darlene’s obituary. A luncheon will follow at the church. Burial will follow at the Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City, Iowa. A visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 11, 2024 at the Hornick United Methodist Church with a moment of prayer at 7:00 P.M. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.

Darlene was born November 9, 1932 in Stearns, Minnesota, the daughter of George and Quinta (DeLong) Gerdes. She grew up in Long Prairie, Minnesota and graduated from Swanville High School. Darlene continued her education at Morningside College and obtained a teaching certificate. She was an elementary school teacher for several years in Sioux City, Iowa.

Darlene Gerdes and Dwight Teel were married on April 10, 1953 in Sioux City, Iowa. The couple farmed for over 50 years in the Hornick and Whiting areas. Darlene was extensively involved in the hog and grain operations. Dwight passed away on August 6, 2003.

Darlene loved her family very much and enjoyed time with everyone, especially at the family gatherings. She created special bonds with all the family members. She enjoyed bowling, playing cards, gardening, and dancing. Darlene always saw the good in every situation. One of her last words of advice was “Make today a happy day!” Darlene loved to quilt and made many quilts over the years for the church auctions. She was a member of the Hornick United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her children, Larry (Julie) Teel of Whiting, Iowa, Nancy (Dave) Madsen of Whiting, Iowa, Tom Teel of Novato, California, and Lori Teel of West Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren, Adam (Dawn) Teel, Jessica (Jeremy Gabel) Teel, Carrie (David) Dietschy, Chad (Crystal) Madsen, and Candace Madsen; great-grandchildren, Blaine, Braiden, Blair, Lauryn, Brenyn, Karsyn, Brayden, Chase, Carley, Caleb, Paxton, Swayzi, Callum, and Barrett; brother, Ray (Sue) Gerdes of Sparks, Nevada; brother-in-law, Jack Chamberlain of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Quinta (DeLong) Gerdes; husband, Dwight Teel; parents-in-law, Vess and Marie (Steele) Teel; granddaughter, Jennifer Teel; and sister, Donna Chamberlain.
