Joyce Anne (Martin) Queen, daughter of Fremont and Opal (Umphenour) Martin was born on February 28, 1935, in Sidney, Iowa. When Joyce was three months old her father died suddenly from a suspected perforated ulcer. When Joyce was two years old, her mother married Kenneth Schmitt of Sidney. He took the role of being a father very seriously and Joyce was forever devoted to him. At a very young age Joyce demonstrated a love for helping others whether family, neighbor, adult or child.
Joyce began her education in Sidney and graduated from McKinley High School in Cedar Rapids. Upon graduating, Joyce went to work at Collins Radio full time. She moved in with her grandparents to help care for her bed ridden grandfather.
Joyce met Norman Queen in 1960 when he was stationed near Cedar Rapids, as a weatherman with the Air Force. Joyce and her daughter Daneen from a previous marriage, traveled by train to Merced, California, where Norman was permanently stationed. Upon arrival, Joyce and Norman were united in marriage on November 19, 1960, in Merced, California.
In 1961, Norman was honorably discharged from the Air Force and the family moved back to Iowa to the Queen farm and farmed with Norman’s father. Joyce took on the role of housewife and helped in any way she could. Joyce, Norman, and their two daughters moved to the Peterson place South of Soldier in March of 1962. There they farmed and raised their five children over the next fifty plus years. When the grandchildren began to arrive, Joyce welcomed each one with open arms. Each grandchild spent many hours with Grandma Joyce and each had special memories of their time spent with grandma and grandpa Norm.
She enjoyed reading, sewing, gardening, crossword puzzles, cooking, and game shows.
Joyce was baptized into the Moorhead Christian Church in 1970 and was very active serving as an elder and deacon, Sunday and Bible School Teacher, and a chairwoman of Christian Women’s Fellowship. Joyce instilled in her children and grandchildren that to live a Christian life is to serve others.
