Dorothy Gust, age 95, of Mapleton, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at the Maple Heights Nursing Home of Mapleton, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 10, 2024, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Ute, Iowa. Pastor Nathan Peitsch will officiate. Committal Services will follow in the St. Clair Township Cemetery of Ute, Iowa.

A Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, February 09, 2024, at the Armstrong-Van Houten Funeral Home of Mapleton, Iowa. The Armstrong-Van Houten Funeral Home of Ute and Mapleton, Iowa, is in charge of the arrangements.

Dorothy Lois Gust was born on June 20, 1928, she was one of five daughters born to Curt F. Hoffman and Lorine (Kahrs) Hoffman in Onawa, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in her faith at the old First Lutheran Church of Onawa. Dorothy grew up on a farm south of Onawa and attended Franklin Township #4 country school through the 8th grade. She continued her education in the Onawa Public School District where she graduated from Onawa High School with the class of 1945. After graduation, Dorothy worked as a switch board operator for the Bell Telephone Company in Onawa.

On December 21, 1952, Dorothy was united into marriage to Lawrence H. Gust of Mapleton, Iowa, at the First Lutheran Church of Onawa. The couple were blessed with four children: Thomas, Anthony, Steven and Audrey. Dorothy and Lawrence farmed and raised their family on a farm located south of Mapleton. After Lawrence’s passing in 1992, Dorothy remained on the farm until health issues moved her to the Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, which she has called home for the last two years.

Dorothy was a devoted and faithful member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Ute, Iowa. She was an avid reader, devoted mother, loved her pets especially her cats and treasured spending time with her family.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Thomas Gust of Ames, IA, Anthony (Shirley) Gust of Council Bluffs, IA, Steven Gust of Mapleton, IA, and Audrey Gust of Mapleton, IA; step-grandchildren: Dawn, David, and Daniel Letcher; sister June Riddle; nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and neighbors.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence (October 26, 1992); parents Curt and Lorine Hoffman; parents-in-law Herman and Ruth Gust; sisters Virginia Massie, Phyllis Nutt, and Mary Zahn; sister-in-law Lorene Gust; and other relatives.
