31 January 2024Joseph “Big Joe” J. Komarek, 81, of Onawa, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at Burgess Health Center, Onawa, Iowa.
A celebration of life will be 1:00 P.M. – 3:00 P.M. Saturday, February 10, 2024, at the Onawa Community Center, Onawa, Iowa. Private family burial will be held at a later date with Military Honors by the United States Army at the Graceland Cemetery, Knoxville, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.
Joseph John was born March 30, 1942, in Howard County, Iowa, the son of Joe and Leona (Haskovec) Komarek. He attended Elma High School. Joe proudly served in the United States Army until he was honorably discharged February 7, 1962.
Joe and Mary Salsberry were united in marriage on July 4, 1968, in Elmira, Missouri.
Joe and Mary moved to Onawa in the early 1980’s. He drove truck for many years before owning and operating Komarek Towing for over twenty-seven years.
Joe enjoyed auctions, thrifting, fishing, and collecting guns. During the winter time he enjoyed his time in Arizona, California, and Oregon traveling in his motor home.
Survivors include his children, Ed Komarek of Knoxville, Iowa, and Danny (Kathy) Komarek of Onawa, Iowa; grandchildren Danny (Angela) Komarek, Christy (Richard) Madsen, Angie Komarek, Staci (Kevin) Crawford, Amanda Komarek, Michael (Stacy) Komarek, Heather (James) Shockey, Dustin Kreimeyer, Andrew (Lacey) Kreimeyer, Jeramy Komarek, and Joey (Billie) Komarek; twenty-two great- grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mary (David) Narveson, Leona (Edward) Heit, and Margaret Komarek.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Komarek; parents, Joe and Leona (Haskovec) Komarek; infant children, Fredrick, Staci, and Christina; daughter, Brenda Miller; son, Mike Komarek; granddaughter, Mystie Kreimeyer; sister, Irene Brand; and brother, John Komarek.
