Bernie A. Erickson, 70, of Castana, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at his home surrounded by family.

A funeral service will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, December 4, 2023, at Castana Community Church U. C. C., Castana, Iowa, with Pastor Linda Boggs, officiating. A recording of the service will be posted on the Goslar Funeral Home website with Bernie’s obituary. Burial will follow at the Kennebec Cemetery, Castana, Iowa, with Military Honors provided by the Grimsley – Thayer American Legion Post #502, of Castana, Iowa. A visitation will be 3:00-6:00 P.M. Sunday, December 3, 2023, at the Goslar Funeral Home Chapel, Onawa, Iowa, with a 5:15 P.M. prayer service. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa.

Bernie was born December 18, 1952, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Robert and Wilda (Aitken) Erickson. He attended elementary school in Castana and went to high school at West Monona from 1968-1971. Bernie was proud to serve in the 185th Air National Guard from 1972-1978.

Bernie was a farmer all of his life. He enjoyed being on the farm and taking care of his livestock. Bernie was a member of the Monona County Cattlemen’s Association for many years.

He enjoyed hunting, traveling, and dog training. Bernie spent a lot of time with his loyal border collies, Zip and Blue. He enjoyed playing community softball and basketball as well as Arcola community gatherings with his neighbors. He loved to be around his family and everyone enjoyed his sense of humor.

Bernie was a member of the Castana Community Church U.C.C. He was also a member of the Monona County Farm Bureau Association and a dedicated Kennebec Township Trustee. Bernie enjoyed being a 4-H Leader for the Castana Wildcats for more than 20 years.

Survivors include his special friend, Mary Lou Kinard of Council Bluffs, Iowa; siblings, Barry (Marjorie) Erickson of Castana, Iowa, and Sheryl (Michael) Patten of Spencer, Iowa; brother-in-law, Virgil Johnson of Denison, Iowa; niece, Ericka Erickson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; nephews, Chad (Kristi) Johnson of Crescent, Iowa, Brent (Andrea) Johnson of Deloit, Iowa, Darin Johnson of Denison, Iowa, Eric (Samantha) Johnson of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Aaron (Erin) Erickson of Onawa, Iowa, Brandon (Corrie) Patten of Ames, Iowa, and Devin (Kelley) Patten of Spencer, Iowa; and ten great nieces/nephews, as well as other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Wilda (Aitken) Erickson; and sister, Carma Johnson.

As always, Bernie was thinking of others and gave the gift of tissue donation with the Iowa Donor Network.
