Joyce Kathleen was born November 18, 1942, in Onawa, Iowa, the daughter of Robert “Bob” and Helen Mae (Moore) Allen.

Joyce was admitted to the Glenwood Resource Center at a very young age and resided at that facility until January of 1965, when she moved to Park Place, in Glenwood, Iowa. Joyce lived there for many years. While in residence, Joyce was transitioned into a vocational work program at a sheltered workshop and was a very good worker. She especially liked to sort cans but she would also participate in the completion of vocational contract work.

In May of 1992, Joyce moved to the Pacific Place facility located in Pacific Junction, Iowa. She continued to regularly work at the facility’s workshop primarily sorting cans.

She enjoyed the social activities available to her, as well as singing, and dancing, attending movies and holiday parties and listening to Country Music. In 2015, the Pacific Place facility was closed and Joyce moved into a residence in Glenwood, Iowa, where she lived until the end of 2016. On December 1, 2016 Joyce and her roommates moved to Shenandoah, Iowa, and began receiving services from Nishna Productions, Inc. Joyce enjoyed her new home. She was very neat and always made sure all her possessions remained in their special place. She continued to enjoy listening to music, attending a variety of social activities and sharing her life with her long-time roommates.

Survivors include her sister, June Ottman of Onawa, Iowa; long-time roommates Merna Selsor and Michele Forest; friend, Jane Jacobus; many nieces, nephews, and the many wonderful people that positively touched Joyce’s life, providing care and support to her throughout her life.
