DANBURY, Iowa -- Nellie (Brown) Johnston, 86, of Danbury died Tuesday, May 3, 1994 at the Maple Heights Care Center in Mapleton, Iowa.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Danbury United Methodist Church in Danbury. Burial will be in the Danbury Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today at the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove, Iowa.

Mrs. Johnston was born June 28, 1907 in Danbury, the daughter of Willard and Laura (Mengel) Brown. She graduated from Danbury High School in 1925, Grinnell College in 1929 and John Hopkins University in 1931 with a degree in nursing. She worked at a hospital in Chicago, she taught nursing at the Lawrence Hospital in New London, Conn., and the William B. Bakus Hospital in Norwich Conn. She married Elton Arthur Johnston Dec. 24, 1938 in Danbury. The couple operated the Clark Hotel in Albia, Iowa from 1945 to 1963. She later was a nurse for over 10 years at the Ottumwa Hospital until she retired and moved back to Albia. She lived there until coming back to this area in 1986 where she resided at the Willowdale Care Center in Battle Creek, Iowa, later moving to the Maple Heights Care Center in Mapleton.

Mrs. Johnston was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the John Hopkins University Alumni Association.

Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Brown Newsome of Old Saybrook, Conn., a son and his wife, Carl and Karen Johnston of German Town, Tenn., five grandchildren, William and Alan Newsome, and Lora, Shelly and Kristin Johnston: and three great-grandchildren, William, Lindzee and Timothy Newsome.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and two sisters.
