WHITING; Iowa -- James P. Welte, 56, of Whiting died Sunday of injuries suffered in a plane accident in Akron.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary's Catholic church in Danbury. The Kev. Robert Thiele will officiate. Burial will be in Danbury Catholic Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Emery Johnson Post 481, American Legion of Whiting. A ceremony will be conducted by the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and the rosary will be recited by the parish at 8 p.m. and by the Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree at 8:30 p.m. in the Walter Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Mr. Welte was born April 5, 1928, in Mapleton and was raised in the Mapleton and Oto area. He graduated from Oto High School in 1946. He entered the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was awarded the Air Medal. He was a veteran of 26 Korean combat missions.

He returned to Mapleton and farmed with his father for four years before moving to Carroll in 1957 where he managed the airport for two years. He later moved to Dallas, Texas, where he attended the Metropolitan Radio School.

On Sept. 22, 1962, he married Margaret Bring in Dallas. They moved to Sergeant Bluff where he worked for Vern Weber Aircraft. A certified mechanic, he also operated a radio shop for one year. In 1967 they moved to Whiting where he operated the Welte Aerial Spraying. He also managed the Mapleton Airport and was an instructor. He had more than 20,000 hours of flying experience.

Mr. Welte was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Garrigan Assembly of Sioux City, Knights of Columbus Holy Rosary Council 2839 at Danbury, Mapleton Flying Club and the Experimental Aircraft Association.

Survivors include his wife; two stepdaughters, Marjorie Owen of Philadelphia and Elizabeth Wolf of Fort Collins, three brothers, Francis of Smithland, Claire of Danbury and Louis of Anthon; four sisters, Leona Morgan of Mapleton, Mrs. Orville (Catherine) Dandurand and Mrs. Walter (Pauline) Scott, both of Salix, and Mrs. Robert (Helen) Stodden of Shelton, Wash., and two grandsons.
