Neva J. Bean

Salix, Iowa

Neva J. Bean, 83, of Salix passed away on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2023, at a local hospital.

Celebration of Life services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Community Church of Christ in Sloan, Iowa. Burial will follow at City of Onawa Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel.

Neva was born on Jan. 7, 1940, in Craig, Iowa, to Clayton and Hazel (Van Buskirk) Newman. She grew up in the Craig and Hawarden area, and graduated from Hawarden High School. After high school, she moved to Sioux City.

On April 27, 1963, she married Robert T. Bean in Sioux City, and to this union three children were born. The two shared 51 years of marriage, and Robert passed away in February of 2015. The couple lived in Sioux City until 1979; from there they moved to Salix, and it has been their home ever since.

Neva worked in a variety of industries in the Siouxland area, including Zenith, Sue Bee Honey, Century 21, and the Woodbury County Sheriff's Department where she worked for over 20 years until her retirement. She also worked part-time for Skien Lutheran Church in Sloan, and then First Unitarian Church in Sioux City for many years. Her greatest job, however, was her role as a mother and grandmother.

In her younger years, Neva enjoyed bowling. She picked up crocheting, quilting, and sewing from her mother, and after her mother's passing she continued the work for many years. She made baby blankets for each new family member and donated beanies to the NICU department at St. Luke's for many years. She also donated apples from her apple tree, and clothing to a homeless shelter in Council Bluffs each year.

She loved playing bingo with her friends Marge and Larry, and always enjoyed going to the Wednesday or Thursday night buffet at WinnaVegas Casino with her sisters- and brothers-in-law and her son, Chuck. She loved her annual trips to Las Vegas to visit her son, Tom, and cherished the time she spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She was dedicated to honoring her family, and decorated family members' headstones each year for Memorial Day. She would also bake for each family holiday, always remembering to bake extra Pumpkin and Banana Bread!

She is survived by her children Robert "Chuck" Bean of South Sioux City, Thomas Clyde Bean of Las Vegas, Nev., and Renee (Ray) Stoulp of Hinton, Iowa; grandchildren Lauren Bean (Josh Pottorff), Kaley Stoulp (Spencer Burke), and Caden Stoulp; great-grandchildren Tegan Bean and Jaxson Pottorff; brother-in-law, Ed Clift of Council Bluffs, Iowa; brother-in-law, Dale Bean of Onawa, Iowa; sister-in-law, Ruth (Roger) Meadows of Onawa; sister-in-law, Patty Bellis of Onawa; brother-in-law Gary (Janie) Bean of La Vista, Neb.; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; father, Clayton Newman; mother, Hazel Newman; sisters Betty (Duane) Witt, and Elizabeth "Boots" (Swede) Haddican; brother, Keith (Karen) Newman; infant brother, Derald; sister-in-law, Judy Clift; sister-in-law, Carol Bean; brother-in-law, Jerry Bellis; brother-in-law, Ralph Bean; and parents-in-law, Clyde and Margaret Bean.
