CWO3 William H. Ooten

Formerly Onawa, Iowa

Chief Warrant Officer 3, William Hooghkirk Ooten, USN Ret. arrived at his final harbor on Monday, Dec. 5, 2022.

Mr. Ooten was born in Onawa at Mrs. Sloan's Maternity Home to Jess and Doris (Copenhaver) Ooten on Sept. 12, 1940.

Mr. Ooten graduated from Onawa High School and joined the U.S. Navy in 1959, retiring in 1989. He obtained his Associate's degree in Business Management, Bachelor's in Education, and his Master's degree in history specializing in Civil War and Ancient Roman warfare. Mr. Ooten served on several ships and was renowned for his sea stories. Among his many adventures, he dined with the Swiss Army Guard, had tea with Pope John Paul, walked across Europe, dove for pearls in Japan, and once attended his own premature memorial.

After retiring, Bill enjoyed being a harbor master, substitute teacher, power plant operator and hunting and fishing guide in Adak, Alaska, as well as furniture making and gentleman farming in Oklahoma. He served as deacon in most First Christian Churches where he settled.

He is survived by his wife Jaye (Smith); sons Jesse and Michael; grandchildren Savannah (Ross) Carter, Jonathan Ooten, and Emmy, Ethan, and Elijah Ooten; great-grandchildren Jace and Hayden Carter; sisters Penny (Bill) Miltenberger of Sloan and Lisa (Warren) Reilmann of Missouri; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife June (Archer); son Shawn; and brother James.

He will be mourned by everyone he referred to as Shipmate. We bid calm seas and forward winds to CWO Bill.
