Verdetta Ann Peterson, 96, of Marcus, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, October 2, 2022, at the Heartland Care Center in Marcus. Funeral services will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 8, 2022, at Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus. Rev. Dr. Travis Stevick will officiate. Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday at Grant Cemetery, rural Rodney, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church. The family will be present from 10 – 11 a.m.

Verdetta Ann Peterson was born on July 13, 1926, in Ticonic, Iowa, the daughter of Wayne Edwin and Opal Cecelia (Lundeen) Houchins. She attended school in Castana, Iowa where she graduated from high school.

On December 31, 1946, Verdetta and Carlyle Peterson were united in marriage in Onawa, Iowa. They made their first home in Ticonic, Iowa. The family moved to Marcus, Iowa in 1966, and Verdetta took a position with the City of Marcus as the City Clerk. She kept that position for 20 years. She and Carlyle also owned and operated the Marcus Variety Store from 1979 to 1989. Carlyle passed away in May of 1989.

Verdetta was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus for over 50 years. She participated in United Methodist Women and numerous events and committees at church. Verdetta was a 4-H leader for many years. She enjoyed tending to her flower gardens and making crafts. You could also find her cooking, baking and Verdetta was an avid bird watcher. Shopping trips with her daughters and attending her grandchildren’s events were among her favorite activities.

She is lovingly remembered by her children and their spouses, Penny and Bob Jones of Sloan, IA and Vickie and Clark Rainboth of Marcus, IA; grandchildren, Jason (Dawn) Rainboth, Wendy (Todd) Tryon, Joseph (Brandie) Rainboth, Lee Rainboth, Darrin (Sheriffa) Jones, Amy (Dan Tope) Lidgett, Jessica (Jake) Espenmiller and Pete (Amy) Johannsen; 24 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandsons; brother-in-law, Darrell (Mary Jane) Peterson of Le Mars, IA; sister-in-law, Betty Jean Peterson of Cypress, CA; along with several nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carlyle; a daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Ron Johannsen; a brother, Wayne L. Houchins; a sister-in-law, Sharon Petersen; and brother-in-law, Duane Peterson.
