Rosalie Ruth (Irish) Torticill 1927 - 2022

Rosalie Ruth (Irish) Torticill, 95 years old, of Onawa, Iowa, passed away Monday, September 12, 2022 at CHI Health Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa following a courageous battle with heart disease.

Rosalie was born on May 9, 1927 near Glenwood, Iowa, the daughter of Claude Clement and Ona Mae (Kidder) Irish. She was one of 13 children. The family moved to Salix, Iowa and she graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School in Salix with the class of 1945. William (Bill) Edward Torticill fell in love with the ‘girl in the pink sweater’ and they were united in marriage on August 16, 1945 in Salix. Nine children were born to this union whose names all began with the letter D (Diann, Debby, Delane, Dennis, Dannette, Denise, Doreen, David and Dawn.) Rosalie and Bill celebrated their fifty-third wedding anniversary before Bill passed away on June 15, 1999.

Rosalie was not only beautiful, she was an accomplished artist, baker & cook. She was known for her immense decorated cookies, fudge, cakes, cinnamon rolls, popcorn balls, chicken and noodles & potato soup. She owned and operated Rosalie’s Shoppe in Onawa for several years where she taught classes in painting plaster ware & silk flower decorating. The kids loved the video games and treats. She loved oil painting especially wildlife and roses. She was an expert seamstress and designed & sewed her daughters’ clothes including their prom and wedding dresses. She was their wedding designer and planner making exquisite beaded gowns, veils, wedding cakes and silk flower arrangements. Her gift of art could be found in everything she touched. She also enjoyed doll collecting, antiquing, boating, waterskiing, writing poems and gardening. She was a den leader for the Cub and Boy Scouts (Den 50) and especially loved doing the decorations for the Blue & Gold Banquets. She was proud of the row of trees that her den planted at Blue Lake that still exist. Right up until her death, she had an amazing memory. Her sense of humor and stories endeared her to all.

Her greatest joy was for her family which grew from her nine children to 26 grandchildren, 27 great- grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren with another on the way. She loved her cat, Chloe.

In addition to her family, religion was very important to Rosalie. She was a devout member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Onawa including the Rosary Society for many years. She lovingly raised her family with a strong devotion to the Catholic faith. A favorite trip of hers was to Italy to see the Vatican and the Pope on her 81st birthday.

Survivors left to cherish her memory are her children, Diann Writer of Vallejo, California, Dennis Torticill of Kyle, Texas, Dannette (Mark) Eveloff of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Denise (Steve) Struble of Logan, Iowa, Doreen (Kevin) Heisterkamp of Early, Iowa and David Torticill of Onawa, Iowa; grandchildren; great- grandchildren; and great-great grandchildren; as well as many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Claude and Ona (Kidder) Irish; her husband, William Torticill; children; Dawn Melissa Torticill, Delane Torticill, and Deborah Torticill; siblings, Claudia, William, Vivian, Clare, Paul, Frances, Fern, Dick, Donna, Mary, Clifford and Robert; and several other family members.

Services: A Rosary will be said at 9:15 A.M. on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at St. John Catholic Church in Onawa. A Mass of Christian Burial will be officiated by Father Michael Erpelding, Celebrant, at 10:30 A.M. Visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass. Burial will follow at the Onawa Cemetery followed by a luncheon. For those who are unable to attend, services will be live streamed on the Goslar Funeral Home website with a link on her obituary. Due to Covid, family requests that those attending to please bring & wear masks.

Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments in Onawa, Iowa.

As an expression of sympathy, flowers may be sent to the funeral home or memorials in Rosalie’s memory may be made to the family for future designation in her honor.
