ONAWA, Iowa - Frances (Spooner) Gaukel, 94, of Mapleton, Iowa, formerly of Onawa, died Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John Catholic Church in Onawa, with the Revs. Frank Nemmers and Edmund Tiedeman officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 7:30 p.m. and a Scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Mrs. Gaukel was born June 28, 1906, in Sargent, Neb., the daughter of Fay and Mary (Murray) Spooner. She received her education in Sargent and at Duchesne Academy in Omaha. She taught rural school in Nebraska.

She married Dr. Leo A. Gaukel in 1932. The couple made their home in Onawa. Her husband died May 23, 1983. She entered Bishop Drumm Retirement Center in Johnston, Iowa, in 1987. She moved to Maple Heights in Mapleton in 1998.

She served as pianist and organist at St. John Catholic Church and at Bishop Drumm. She served on the board of directors at Elmwood Nursing Home. She enjoyed traveling, sewing, gardening and music.

Survivors include four sons and their wives, Thomas and Janet of Bloomington, Minn., James and Mary of Mapleton, Dennis and Carolyn of West Des Moines and Philip and Kathy of Onawa; a daughter and her husband, Ann and Steve Czonstka of Niceville, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Coonrad; a brother, Robert Spooner, and a great-grandson.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Kevin, Chris, Bill, Scott, Tom, Erich, Shane, Chad, David and Michael Gaukel.
