Emma “Jean” Mann was born on April 4, 1938, to David and Alice (Phillips) Mann in Minneapolis, Kansas. She grew up in Kansas and attended school in Salina.

Jean was working in a local café in Wichita, Kansas, when she waited on a handsome man named Arthur Castle who was working for the Boeing Corporation there in town. They fell in love at first sight and got married in that same café on July 3, 1964. After spending a year in Kansas they moved to Smithland, Iowa and lived on an acreage near where Arthur had grown up. Here they raised their three daughters: Connie, Kathryn, and Deborah. Jean resided on that same farm for 53 years before making her home in Danbury, Iowa, for the last four years.

During her time in Smithland, Jean belonged to the United Church of Christ in Rodney, Iowa, where she taught Sunday school. She dedicated many hours to the Rodney Senior Center and delivering Meals on Wheels. After moving to Danbury, she joined the Danbury United Methodist Church.

Jean enjoyed helping anyone that needed a hand. She was a homemaker who greatly enjoyed gardening, doing crafts, and adding to her collections of rocks, chicken figurines, buttons and antiques. She loved her grandkids to pieces and enjoyed holding annual New Year’s Eve parties for her granddaughters and visiting casinos with her granddaughter Shelby.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters Connie (Ken Schmidt) Kass of LeMars, IA, Kathryn (Stan) Petersen of Danbury, IA and Deborah (Mark) Jensen of Mapleton, IA; grandchildren Andrew (Samantha Henderson) Weikel, Bailey Petersen, Shelby (Christopher) Lee, Brandee (Jay) DeBoom, Brittany (Eric Clarke) Weikel, Cole (Madeline Bjorklun) Jensen, and Brandon Kass; great-grandchildren Everett Weikel and Neva Weikel; sisters-in-law Barbara Mann and Darlene Williams; brothers-in-law Jim Castle and Gary (Betty) Castle; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends, and neighbors.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur L. Castle; her parents David and Alice (Phillips) Mann; brother David “Sonny” Mann; special cousin Barbara “Sis” Ingram; special friend Joan Sullivan; her beloved dog Max; and extended family members.
