Virginia Mae VanNess, 90, of Moorhead, Iowa passed away Friday, September 24, 2021 at Maple Heights Nursing Home, Mapleton, Iowa.

A funeral service will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday, September 30, 2021 at the Rush Family Chapel, Onawa, Iowa with Darren C. E. Goslar officiating. Burial will follow in the Spring Valley Cemetery, Moorhead, Iowa. Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at the chapel with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.

Virginia Mae was born July 22, 1931 in Onawa, Iowa, the daughter of Magnus “Mac” and Genevieve (Rounsborg) Madsen. She grew up in Turin, Iowa. She attended Brown Country School Kindergarten through 8th Grade. Virginia graduated from Castana High School in 1949.

Virginia and Darrel VanNess were married on June 2, 1951 at the Faith Lutheran Church, Onawa, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Vicky and David. She helped on the farm and raised the children. Darrel passed away May 8, 2002.

Virginia worked for IKAN Marketing in Soldier, Iowa for many years. She enjoyed reading, country music, watching RFD T.V., and meeting with her friends monthly for lunch. She was a member of the Bethesda Lutheran Church, Moorhead, Iowa.

Survivors include her children, Vicky (special friend, James Free, Jr.) Clemon of Soldier, Iowa, and David (Janice) VanNess of Denison, Iowa; grandchildren, Brent (DeeDee) Pedersen, Nathan VanNess, Cody (Brooke) VanNess, and Chelsey (friend, Derek Krohnke) VanNess; great-grandchildren, Matthew and Peyton Pedersen, and Lennon VanNess; one brother, Charles (Peggy) Madsen of Crescent, Iowa; two sisters, Jane Heck of Onawa, Iowa, and JoAnn (Dick) Thoreson of Sioux City, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Darrel VanNess; her parents, Mac and Genevieve (Rounsborg) Madsen; four brothers, Curt Madsen, Page Madsen, Frank Madsen, and Burdette Madsen; one infant sister, MaryAnn; one brother-in-law, Robert Heck; and two sisters-in-law, Jeannie Madsen and Betty Madsen.
