Mrs. Jess Baker

Mrs. Jess Baker, a former resident of Onawa , Iowa, passed away at Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on October 5, 1980. She had reached the age of 75 years 4 months and 21 days.

Born Sophia Margaretha Beth on May 14, 1905, at Brown’s Grove, Illinois, she was the daughter of John Beth and Phebia Adele Munster Beth on December 20, 1924, she was united in marriage with Jess Baker at Ottawa, Iowa. The couple made their home in Ute and Whiting before moving to Onawa in 1969. Mr. Baker died on November 16, 1976. Sophia had lived in Council Bluffs since 1979. She was a member of the Lutheran Faith.

Survivors include her three daughters, Mrs. Leo (Eileen) Cutler of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, Mrs. Leonard (Betty) Crossley of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Mrs. Earl (Donna) Collins, a Mapleton, Iowa; two sons, Harold Baker of South Bend, Indiana and Robert Baker of Council Bluffs; two sisters, Martha Winstead of McClean, Illinois and Mrs. Irma Christiansen of Onawa; two brothers, Carl Beth of alliance Nebraska and Herman Beth of Minier, Illinois; 18 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren she was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one sister, Freda burr, and two brothers, George and John.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 8, 1980 at the Pearson funeral chapel at Onawa, Iowa, with our Rev.. Larry Fiscus of Southside Christian Church of Council Bluffs officiating. Mrs. Clara Kelley was the organist and she played the selections “The Old Rugged Cross” and Live’s Railway To Heaven”. Bearers were Jerry Bellis, Dale Barnes, Wilbur Kunze, Ted Rotherham, Oscar Foss and Sherman Struble. Interment was in the Onawa Cemetery with arrangements by the Pearson funeral home Onawa, Iowa.
