Harry (Red) Lane Loses His Life on Highway 141— Funeral Saturday P. M.
Harry Palmer (Red) Lane, 37- year-old Smithland farmer and father of 5 children, was instantly killed when the car he was driving collided almost head-on with a truck driven by Martin Bahnsen of Schleswig on Highway 141 1 1/2 miles east of Smithland about 9:30, Tuesday evening. His head and body were crushed in the collision.
Mr. Lane's 2 sons, Charles Henry and Larry, were in the car with him, but received only minor injuries which were treated by Dr. Ingham of Mapleton. Mr. Bahnsen's 12-year-old daughter was with her father and was thrown through the windshield but was not seriously injured.
With his sons, Mr. Lane was driving west on his way to his farm home from Mapleton. Mr. Bahnsen was returning to his home at Schleswig from Sioux City, driving east. The car, a complete wreck, was taken to Smithland. The truck, considerably damaged, was brought to the Barry-Collins garage in Mapleton.
Dr. Earl Gingles of Onawa, Monona County coroner, investigated the collision.
Funeral services for Mr. Lane will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon in the Methodist church at Smithland. Interment will be at the Smithland cemetery with the Byers Funeral home of Mapleton in charge.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lane August 26, 1907, in McLean, Ill., Mr. Lane resided near Mapleton and Smithland the last 20 years. He was married 17 years ago to Miss Gerelda McGarr. They have lived on farms near Smithland and Mapleton and for 2 years he was in charge of the Standard Oil company tank wagon at Smithland.
He is survived by his widow, 3 daughters, Pauline 15, Lucille 13, and Shirley 5; 2 sons, Charles Henry 12 and Larry 10, his parents of Smithland; 5 sisters, Mrs. Walter Sheriff, Mrs. Thomas Davis and Mrs. Andrew Gerkin of New York, Mrs. Palmer Stonerson of Washington, D. C, and Mrs. Troy Click of Inglewood, Cal., and 3 brothers, Fred of Smithland, Harold of the Navy and Archibald of the Marines.
