Evelyn M. Christiansen, 100, of Amarillo, Texas, formerly of Mapleton, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2020, at her daughter’s home in Amarillo, Texas.

A Private Family Graveside Service was held on Friday, Nov. 13, in the Mount Hope Cemetery of Mapleton. Rev. Chris LaBoube officiated.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, masks were encouraged and social distancing rules applied during all services.

The Armstrong-Van Houten Funeral Home of Mapleton was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Evelyn Christiansen, the daughter of Glen H. and Leola F. (Ping) Wiig, was born July 4, 1920. She married Robert Christiansen in 1943 and commenced farming six miles northwest of Mapleton. They were blessed with three children: Joan, Bruce. and Julie.

Evelyn and Robert loved to travel, play cards, and go to dances. Evelyn loved the big band sound. She worked right alongside Robert on the farm, putting in many hours of hard work.

Evelyn loved to garden and can the fruits of her labor. She was an excellent seamstress, making two beautiful wedding dresses, one for her sister, Lois, and one for niece, Bonnie. She sewed most of her daughters’ school clothes.

Evelyn loved her church, St. Matthews Lutheran Church, and retained her membership there. She loved to sing in the choir with a beautiful soprano voice.

In 2010, Evelyn moved to the Springfield, Mo., area to be close to her son, Bruce, and wife, Merry, and her grandkids that lived there. In 2018, she moved to Amarillo, Texas, to be close to her daughter and her grandchildren that live there. She enjoyed shopping and eating out.

Their mother, grandmother, great-grandmother will be greatly missed.

She is survived by daughter, Joan Valdez Amarillo, Texas; son, Bruce (Merry) Christiansen of Springfield, Mo.; sister, Lois (Joe) Shellinger of Sergeant Bluff; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by husband, Robert Christiansen; daughter, Julie; three brothers; and her parents.
