6 May 2020Virgil C. Olson, 93, of Moorhead, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2020 at Elmwood Care Centre, Onawa, Iowa.
A Graveside Memorial Service will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, June 16, 2020 at the Soldier Lutheran Cemetery, Soldier, Iowa with Pastor Marsha Smith officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the Aaby Post # 442 of the American Legion, VFW Post # 5605 both of Ute, Iowa, and the United States Army. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service.
Virgil C. Olson was born February 28, 1927 near Soldier, Iowa, the son of John G. and Ruth (Valher) Olson. His mother passed away at an early age. Virgil then went to live with his uncle Chris E. and Christena Olson of Soldier, Iowa.
Virgil went to Griffin Willow #2 Country School through the 8th grade and graduated from Soldier High School in 1944. He was drafted into the United States Army on May 25, 1945 and was honorably discharged March 4, 1947.
Virgil met Shirley Marie (Savery) in 1950 and they were married August 28, 1953 in the Soldier Lutheran Church, Soldier, Iowa. They made their home on a farm southeast of Soldier, Iowa. To this union two children were born; Steven V. Olson in 1954 and Carolyn Sue Olson in 1957.
Virgil and Shirley farmed Shirley’s parents farm from 1970-1996 along with their own farm east of Soldier, Iowa. They purchased a home in Moorhead in 1989 after selling the farm and moving closer to Shirley’s failing parents. After the loss of Shirley’s father, they moved her mother Ellen into their home to take care of her until her death.
He was a lifelong farmer and enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and checkers. He loved to watch westerns.
He was a member of the Soldier Lutheran Church, Soldier, Iowa. Virgil was a member of the American Legion Post #462 of Soldier, Iowa which has now merged with Ute, Iowa.
Survivors include his son, Steven Olson of Moorhead, Iowa; and several other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Marie (Savery) Olson; one daughter, Carolyn Sue Mortenson on June 23, 2013; his parents, John G. and Ruth (Valher) Olson; his sister, Mildred Louise Olson; and his parents-in-law Floyd and Ellen (McHugh) Savery.
